Claudrena Harold and Jahan Ramazani

Guests:

Claudrena Harold, professor of African American and African Studies and History affiliated with both the University of Virginia’s Corcoran Department of History and the Carter G. Woodson Institute.

She has focused on black student activism at the University of Virginia, and who not only instructs through the classroom but has produced and co-directed six short films featured in international film festivals.

She teaches the very popular class "BLACK FIRE" —which is also a multimedia initiative documenting the struggle for social justice and racial equality at the University of Virginia. With all of this I personally hope to also get to her work around the artistry & politics of African American Gospel music.

And

Jahan Ramazani is the Edgar F. Shannon Professor in the Department of English. He is one of the world’s leading literary and poetry scholars. Jahan has been called the most knowledgeable, imaginative, and influential minds in his field. He has written and edited numerous books and collections, and in doing so he’s been said to have reshaped the literary landscape of the field for millions of students worldwide.

Jahan's scholarly achievements and awards are many. One of his books, Poetry of Mourning, was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award, and another, A Transnational Poetics, won an American Comparative Literature Association Prize for the best book in comparative literary history. He has received a Guggenheim Fellowship, a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship, the Modern Language Association’s William Riley Parker Prize, and the Thomas Jefferson Award. He was recently elected to one of the oldest and most prestigious societies in the U.S., the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
