Guests: Tish Jennings, internationally recognized leader in the fields of social and emotional learning and mindfulness in education. We discussed her new book, “The Trauma-Sensitive Classroom.” Frank Dukes, mediator helping people and organizations address complex public conflicts in ways that strengthen communities.

Details: We discussed Tish Jennings' new book, The Trauma-Sensitive Classroom: Building Resilience with Compassionate Teaching which explores how we often misinterpret negative student behavior and how that affects student learning. Tish spoke about what teachers and others can do to help these students flourish. She is also the author of Mindfulness for Teachers: Simple Skills for Peace and Productivity in the Classroom. Tish is an Associate Professor at the Curry School of Education and Human Development at the University of Virginia and is also affiliated with the University's Contemplative Sciences Center.

We also spoke with Frank Dukes, a mediator helping communities address complex public conflicts in ways that strengthen those communities. He served on the Charlottesville Blue Ribbon Commission on Race, Memorials and Public Spaces and is a member of the design team for UVA’s Memorial for Enslaved Laborers, to be completed in fall, 2019. We covered these topics as well as the newly forming, Truth Commission, which grew out of the Charlottesville pilgrimage to Montgomery in the summer of 2018; and issues surrounding the coalfields of Appalachia. Frank is the founder of the University of Virginia's Institute for Environmental Negotiation and is now a Distinguished Fellow there and he is the Executive Director of UCARE, University & Community Action for Racial Equity, which addresses the University’s legacy of slavery, segregation, and its impact on the wider community.
