We dished with Priya Mahadevan about her unique brand of southern Indian cooking like the “Real Chai Masala,” Sassy Cilantro Chutney, and Magical Moong and Garlic Soup. Before cooking professionally, Priya was a political journalist in India. And as if that weren’t enough, she’s currently a local group leader of “Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense” here in Charlottesville, and she’s the author of two children’s books.

We spoke with Leigh Ann Carver from the Maxine Platzer Lynn Women’s Center on that nexus of social justice, mentoring, and education for students and the community. We’ll hear about many of the center’s endeavors including the Men’s Leadership Project, legal clinics, and work around Woman and Global Justice, Gender Violence, and Body Image.

DETAILS:

Priya Mahadevan owns Priya’s Now Catering, and has created her own online food shop—offering up soups, spices, teas & chutneys. You may also have spotted her cooking up delicious Dosas at her Desi Dosa stand at the City Market and Stonefiled Market

Leigh Ann Carver is from the Maxine Platzer Lynn Women’s Center a hub of social justice, mentoring, and education for students and the community. The center is known to some as a place to turn for professional counseling yet their work runs deeper providing respected middle school mentoring programs training women leaders, legal and veterans clinics, supporting global non-profits involved in social justice, and they also provide robust internship opportunities for students.
