We spoke with Lisa Speidel about gender based violence and healthy masculinity and Cale Jaffe, about the current Virginia case that could overturn a ban on uranium mining and the resulting economic & environmental impacts.
Lisa Speidel is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Women, Gender & Sexuality at the University of Virginia. She has worked in the Charlottesville community for 24 years in multiple positions related to women, gender and sexuality studies. Her outreach services at the Sexual Assault Resource Agency (SARA) include training programs at UVA and working directly with sexual assault peer education groups at the University. Her work and research focuses on examining the role of masculinity, healthy sexuality, gender based violence and the intersection of racism and other forms of systemic oppression. She also teaches women’s self-defense classes both in the community and as a credit-based class at UVA, and has developed a new self-defense program that focuses on acquaintance assault. At present she is working on an anthology that encompasses the unheard voices of navigating a sexually confusing culture.
Cale Jaffe is an environmental and regulatory law expert, he is the director of the Environmental and Regulatory Law Clinic at the University of Virginia School of Law. He has litigated before the Supreme Court of Virginia and in numerous energy-related cases before the Virginia State Corporation Commission. He’s here to talk about a Virginia mining case that could overturn a ban on uranium mining in VA and the resulting health & environmental impacts...and implications for the rest of the country.
