Charlottesville’s Pilgrimage to Montgomery — 10.20.2018

adminAOS, Charlottesville, RACE, Talk, WPVC

We spoke with Gloria Beard and Cauline Yates who made the 98-person pilgrimage to Montgomery, Alabama in the summer of 2018 to the new Legacy Museum and National Memorial for Peace and Justice. The journey also included several historic civil-rights-movement sites—we’ll learn of the staggering significance of these places in telling the stark and inconvenient truth about just what Black people endured at the hands of White people in this country. And we heard their own stories of living through Jim Crow in Charlottesville.

Details:
Gloria Beard and Cauline Yates travelled with the largest group to visit the new in 2018, Equal Justice Initiative’s Legacy Museum and National Memorial for Peace and Justice. The trip helped memorialize the 1898 lynching of John Henry James that occurred here in Virginia’s Albemarle County, bringing soil from that spot to the museum.

The museum is this country’s first memorial dedicated to the legacy of enslaved black people, people terrorized by lynching, African Americans humiliated by racial segregation and Jim Crow. The Museum and memorial are finally telling the truth about the horrific details of slavery and segregation showing how white supremacy allows racial terrorism to flourish as a social custom outside the law and that when segregation ended, mass incarceration began.
