An amazing show with two passionate historians. We spoke to Kyrill Kunakhovich about dictators, fascists, & nationalists—what we need to know in this political moment; and to Kelley Fanto Deetz about how she's transforming the narrative at her new gig, Robert E. Lee's birthplace.

"Bringing Light from the Shadow and Understanding Darkness"

Show Details:
Kyrill Kunakhovich is an assistant professor of History at the University of Virginia’s Corcoran Department of History. His expertise is modern Europe with a focus on central and eastern Europe in the twentieth century. We discussed his new book which he co-edited with Piotr Kosicki, The Long 1989: Decades of Global Revolution and about dictators, fascists, & nationalists—what’s the appeal? What can the events of 1989 and the current situation in Hungary teach us. Kyrill also talks about his new class "Life in Dictatorships" teaching undergraduates about what that life is like, through first-person accounts of people living in authoritarian regimes - Nazi Germany, communist Eastern Europe, Putin's Russia. We heard the interesting and often surprising perspective of his students.

We also chatted with Kelly Fanto Deetz, expert on African American history, foodways, and archaeology. With her contagious dynamism and ardor, Kelley is transforming and re-invigorating the story of Stratford Hall. where she is Director of Programming, Education, and Visitor Engagement. Kelley is also a professor, scholar, and author of the critically acclaimed book, Bound to the Fire: How Virginia’s Enslaved Cooks Helped Invent American Cuisine
